Nigel Newton is a digital strategist who champions innovation in the marketplace, most recently as the Canadian VP of Blippar, the world’s leading Augmented Reality solutions provider.
Nigel introduced AR and interactive print to Canadian mainstream media in 2012 with Layar while leading newspaper advertising innovation projects at Postmedia Digital, a division of Postmedia Network, (Canada’s largest publisher of English language newspapers). This led to the groundbreaking Nissan Canada campaign with Postmedia and the Toronto Star, that won a Media Innovation Award.
In 2013 he established Layar's first enterprise publishing launch with Glacier Media’s BC newspapers and supported key Layar consumer magazine implementations including Readers Digest Canada and the Toronto Star’s “Go Beyond” interactive edition with Nissan. In 2014 Nigel led business development for Layar in the US and Canada.
He began a digital media decade in 2005 with Youth Culture, launching Canada’s first social network for young women 14-24 through Vervegirl.com, then switched demographics to 45+ launching EverBetter.ca for Rogers, before joining Postmedia as Digital Product Director for their real estate and retail channels including Househunting.ca and their print to digital advertising, where he introduced interactive print with Layar.
His music career began in 1992 as General Manager at Björk’s label in the UK, One Little Indian Records, where he launched “Debut” her first solo album post Sugarcubes. He then came to Canada, working with Quality Music to make Dance Mix 95 the first million selling compilation CD. He then headed up marketing for Al Mair’s Attic Records and Alan Gregg’s SONG Corporation. In 2002 he switched to major labels with SONY as GM of the RED Distribution stream where he managed a stable of 40+ labels implementing an online portal for managing label release assets.
