In January 2013, my family moved to a homeless shelter that didn't allow pets and had to give me up. I didn't understand why I couldn't come, too. I loved them so much. They called me Muneca...babydoll in Spanish.

I was petrified when I got to Animal Care & Control of NYC, the city's shelter - the people were nice but I was all alone in a strange place. The odds weren't in my favor. Most older cats in shelters don't find new homes. They end up at that 'farm upstate', if you know what I mean.

I lucked out - a nice lady adopted me. I love my new family a lot. They call me Nika. And if I do say so myself, I'm an awesome pet.

I pay my good luck forward every year by raising money to help other shelter cats & dogs find forever homes like I did.
