A late bloomer, I have been - among other things - a freelance writer, adult education teacher and primary school teacher. I am currently studying to become a counselling psychologist.
While I've always had an interest in the brain and how it works, it's taken me a while to get the confidence to pursue my interest in any meaningful way. Now that I'm into my Honours year I'm keen to begin to put things into a tangible vehicle. Hence my blog - the beginning of things to come!
My philosophy of psychology (oxymoron?) is that self-awareness is the key to change because it allows us to harness our strengths and manage our weaknesses as we pursue our goals.
While we may need help from professionals to guide this voyage into self-awareness and to help us learn the tools we need to exert control over our thoughts and behaviours as required, it is up to us to do the work and do it honestly.
Mental health issues for most us - I believe - don't require a label, they just require us to recognise and accept our vulnerabilities, our imperfections and work with them. I'm certainly trying to!
