Student and Volunteer in Troy, Michigan

Hi! My name is Nina Aitas and I am a senior at Troy High School. I have made it my goal to take advantage of as many of life’s exciting opportunities as I can, which has made my life quite the adventure!

Over the years, I have experimented with many different interests. From exploring writing and dance to cooking and volleyball, I have learned a lot about myself and about the world. For example, I now know that I may not be able to land a triple pirouette or fix a five-course meal, but I value the unique camaraderie found in a team and the perseverance required to pick yourself up after defeat. Maybe my desire to investigate new ideas and challenge myself is a manifestation of my pinnacle interest: science. I want to become a medical research scientist in the future; I get excited just picturing myself working in a lab.

In my free time I love to learn about the different cultures and environments around the world. The only country I have physically visited outside of the United States is Canada, but I have used the magic of National Geographic documentaries and Google Earth Street View to transport me to dozens more. My favorite region to explore is Oceania, and I hope to visit Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands one day.

My home town of Troy, Michigan is just as interesting to me as the other side of the globe. I love participating in the civic community, whether it be through volunteering at the Troy Public Library and at the Community Center’s youth summer camps or by working as an Election Inspector at the city’s polls. Even though I am a generally quiet person, I am a leader in my school community. I hold leadership positions in three school clubs (Student Government, Chemistry Club, and Courtyard Club) and I love the challenge. What they say is true: you need to push yourself outside of your comfort zone (no matter how terrified you may be) in order to grow.

That is a little bit about me! Thanks for reading!
