Cooking and culinary adventures were foreign territories for me until I was well into my forties. Before then, I had never met a real live garlic clove. I thought sweet potatoes included candy. Instant coffee v. ground coffee didn't really matter to me. My kids still tell tales of my one-pan "hash" dinners - scrambled eggs, frozen hash browns, and bacon - and the fire alarm as the signal that dinner was ready.
