Nelson Oliveira

NELSON OLIVEIRA is a multimedia journalist based in the New York City area.
He previously worked for Hearst Connecticut Media for more three and a half years. During that time, he covered education for the Stamford Advocate, worked as a crime and courts reporter for the News-Times in Danbury, and served as the only town reporter and photographer for the New Canaan News.
Nelson is pursuing a master's degree in the Studio 20 digital journalism program at New York University. He graduated Cum Laude from Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism in 2013 and he also has an associate's degree in communication arts from Norwalk Community College.
As a student journalist, he was actively involved with The Statesman, the main publication at Stony Brook, where he was a staff writer, photographer and assistant news editor. He also had two internships while in college: at Newsday and at the Stamford Advocate.
Nelson’s the author of several award-winning pieces, including:
-First place in a statewide contest (Society of Professional Journalists, Connecticut Chapter) for his coverage of a Stamford neighborhood concerned by a spike in crime.
-Second place in an international competition (Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts) for his coverage of Hurricane Sandy in Long Beach, N.Y.
-First place in a statewide contest (New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest) for breaking the story of an undocumented student who was facing deportation.
Born and raised in Brazil, Nelson speaks fluent Portuguese.
