Most of us know Nopalea or the Nopal Cactus by nopal powder its common name, prickly pear. It is just a highly popular cactus plant. It has been exported to numerous areas of the planet and you will find it generally in most cactus gardens. Its scientific name is Opuntia Streptacantha and is just a species of cactus native to the Sonoran Desert region of the U.S. and Mexico. The inhabitants of Mexico and the Southwest United States used both Nopal bloom and the pad for food and healing. Yet, this highly nutritious food has never been looked at as food by nearly all of us. Yet, it remains a well known fact that it is highly nutritious and contains unique phytonutrients. I get the special antioxidant known as betalains to be especially interesting.
Betalains seem to be especially useful in promoting health all the way right down to the cellular level. Betalains have the capability to help fight off toxic invaders that can create illnesses, especially those associated with inflammation which can put us at an increased risk for chronic disease.
The Nopal cactus has been called a "superfruit," because it contains this rare class of betalain antioxidants which can be highly potent, and the Nopal cactus fruit contains among the highest concentrations of betalains present in all of nature.
More than 100 studies show the energy of betalain antioxidants, and how beneficial they are in protecting against an unseen war of environmental toxins. Betalains would be the pigments that provide the Nopal cactus fruit its vibrant pink color. But that's just the beginning. They're also natural antioxidants -- and they're only present in a some of the world's plants.
The Nopal fruit isn't just one of them small number of special plants, it actually leads the group by containing among the highest amounts of betalains in all of nature.
When betalains are ingested into our system, they begin to restore vitality on a cellular level. By helping your body reduce steadily the toxins surrounding our cells and enabling essential nutrients to attain each cell, the betalains present in the Nopal fig can reduce steadily the inflammation in the body that contributes to disease.
