Norman MacDonald
Principal Crown Counsel in Anguilla, BWI
I am the Principal Crown Counsel (Civil and Commercial) in the Attorney General's Chambers, Government of Anguilla. The PCC (Civil and Commercial) in Anguilla is the functional equivalent of the Solicitor General in Bermuda and other Caribbean countries.
I represent the Government of Anguilla in proceedings before the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and advise the Government on contentious and non-contentious civil and commercial matters. I have also served as the Attorney General of Anguilla (Ag) when the Attorney General is off island.
Prior to joining the Attorney General's Chambers in Anguilla, I served as Senior Crown Counsel, in the Attorney General's Chambers in Bermuda, where I represented the Government of Bermuda in high profile cases in the courts of Bermuda and provided strategic legal advice to government Ministers and departments.
In 2016, I successfully defended the government in a first of its kind case in Bermuda, involving a school teacher who sued the government for $2.2 million claiming she suffered PTSD from bullying in the workplace by her school principal. I also successfully defended myself against the Bermuda Bar Council after the Bar Council brought charges against me for asking a witness a question during cross examination, which was allowed by the trial judge, concerning her sexual orientation .
The Bermuda Bar Disciplinary Tribunal was highly critical of the Bar Council and found that the Bar Council and the Professional Conduct Committee had been disingenuous in their prosecution of the case and their submissions to the Tribunal. I served as the acting Solicitor General of Bermuda when the Solicitor General was absent.
Other notable cases include:
Akeroyd v The Attorney General
Rayclan v The Tax Commissioner
Sanapanreddy v The Attorney General and Commissioner of Police
The Port Royal Golf Course Case
Bermuda Gas v The Tax Commissioner
Holman v The Attorney General
Graham Jack v Minister of Public Works
Government of Bermuda v Lahey Clinic et al.
Prior to joining government, I was in private practice in Canada where I focused on tax and commercial litigation and asset protection for high net worth clients.
I have held in- house legal counsel positions in the media and technology sectors, most notably, with the BBC Worldwide in London, England, and Ericsson in the UK and The Netherlands.
In my spare time I enjoy cooking, travel, the Arts, and playing blues harmonica and ukelele.
