To understand it better, there are 2 types of nutrients, essential and non-essential. Essential ones come from food, and cannot be produced by the body alone. Non-essential are those produced in the body, but sometimes, even in this case, the body needs other nutrients to produce these substances, just like it needs omega 3 fatty acids to produce neurotransmitters. Not all foods contain these nutrients or in the right quantities. Some foods are better than others. Many people lead unhealthy lifestyles and eat the wrong foods, resulting in poor nutrition.
