Nuno Malo

Portugal's most respected and also busiest film composer, Nuno Malo has worked on a dozen feature films, including Amália, which earned him the title “Breakout Composer of the Year” from the IFMCA (International Film Music Critic’s Association). Three of Malo’s films became the #1 movie of their respective years in Portugal. Malo is a unique breed of composer who seamlessly blends elements from classical, modern, and ethnic music. He often uses rare and unusual instruments from different parts of the world, which he often performs himself, that add a refreshing sound and tone to his compositions. For strings, Malo’s style is both lush and sweeping, and his balanced command of both old and new techniques of film scoring make him an unusual combination that creates an emotive sound. Nuno Malo’s credits include 12 feature films, most notably Amália (which earned Malo the “Breakout Composer of the Year” Award and also a nomination for “Best Original Score for A Drama”), The Celestine Prophecy, (based on the book by James Redfield) and Filme Da Treta, the all-time #2 Portuguese box office film. His music has also been performed in concert by the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, and the Lisbon Film Orchestra, which commissioned Malo to write an Elegy for the Portuguese actor Antonio Feio, who recently passed away. For his efforts, Malo has received much recognition, earning the Henry Purcell Composition Prize, the Malcolm Arnold Prize, The Worshipful Company of Musicians Medal, the BMI Film Music Award/Scholarship, The Camões Song Writing Contest, The IFMCA "Breakout Composer of the Year". He has also been recently nominated for a Goldspirit Award for Best Revelation Composer. Currently Malo is composing the score for No God, No Master, a political drama period piece set in the 1920's, starring David Strathairn, Sam Witwer, Mariana Klaveno and Ray Wise, and the score for "LUV" directed by Sheldon Candis, starring Common, Danny Glover, Dennis Haysbert and Michael K. Williams. "LUV" is an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival 2012, in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category. Nuno Malo currently lives in Los Angeles with his pianist wife Ivana
