I’m a PhD candidate at the Centre for Gender Studies at SOAS, University of London. I’m also a Marie Curie ITN CoHaB, Diasporic Constructions of Home and Belonging research fellow at the Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies. I have a BA in Anthropology and a minor in African American Studies from Rollins College (2004) and an MA in Women's History from Sarah Lawrence College (2011).
A feminist race theorist, historian, and ethnographer working at the intersection of black feminist theory, gender studies, and diaspora studies, my research focuses on the diasporic dimensions of black women's politics. In particular, my PhD aims to unpick how 'black' British feminism emerged from the post-colonial migrant experience while examining black women's subjectivity as social life and political awareness.
Outside of my PhD research, my interests include reading (and sometimes rereading) books by my favorite authors (Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Jamaica Kincaid, and Jeffrey Eugenides just to name a few), experimenting with vegetarian cooking (spicy food is a way of life), talking to my plants (afterall, they are my children), discovering new music (Spotify = the best invention ever), and fitness (the gym keeps me happy).
