Obed Avorlenu is a young Ghanaian entrepreneur, self-taught web developer, and digital creator. He is the founder of AfriWidget, an online platform that provides practical calculators, generators, converters, and digital tools designed to make everyday tasks easier.
Born on 17 May 2007 in Ghana's Volta Region, Obed developed an early interest in technology, business, and creating things independently. His journey into technology has largely been self-directed. Rather than relying entirely on traditional education, he taught himself web development through experimentation, research, problem-solving, and building real projects.
After completing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Obed achieved an aggregate of 14, with strong results in subjects including Accounting and Business Management. Although financial challenges affected his plans for continuing his education, he continued developing his skills and pursuing entrepreneurship.
His early online work included a project called VectricEarn, which later evolved into a different vision and became AfriWidget.
AfriWidget
AfriWidget was created from a simple idea: make useful online tools easier to find and access in one place.
The platform has grown to include 100+ tools and pages covering areas such as personal finance, freelancing, remote work, education, investing, career development, scholarships, and everyday calculations.
Among its tools are freelance rate calculators, savings and emergency-fund calculators, investment calculators, salary and cost-of-living tools, side-hustle discovery tools, freelance bio and gig-description generators, cover-letter tools, currency converters, WASSCE and BECE calculators, and university GPA and CGPA calculators.
Although AfriWidget has a strong focus on practical problems faced by African users, Obed's vision is not limited to Africa. He aims to make useful digital tools available to anyone who can benefit from them.
Technology and Development
Obed has taught himself technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js, Express, APIs, databases, authentication systems, GitHub, and Supabase.
His approach to learning is strongly based on building. Instead of waiting until he knows everything, he creates projects, encounters problems, researches solutions, and improves his work.
He has also developed a strong interest in SEO, website indexing, analytics, user behavior, and digital growth. He regularly studies website performance, search impressions, clicks, rankings, traffic sources, and user activity to understand how his products can improve.
For Obed, launching a website is not the final step. It is the beginning of another cycle of learning and improvement.
Entrepreneurship
Obed is interested in more than programming. He has explored online business models including advertising, sponsorships, affiliate marketing, digital services, and content creation.
His entrepreneurial mindset is based on independence and experimentation. When he sees a problem or an opportunity, he tends to think about how technology could be used to create a solution.
He is particularly interested in building digital products that can provide genuine value while also creating sustainable opportunities for their creators.
Content and Creativity
Outside technology, Obed has explored social media, music, storytelling, and content creation.
He has experimented with TikTok content, comedy, voice-based content, music, and technology-related ideas. His content strategy focuses heavily on curiosity, strong hooks, humor, storytelling, and keeping audiences engaged.
He also developed NerveTune, a creative music concept centered around emotional songs, melodies, relaxing instrumentals, and memorable musical experiences.
Artificial intelligence is another area of interest. Obed has explored how AI can be integrated into digital products and has shown curiosity about how AI systems work internally, including the possibility of building and training his own models.
Philosophy and Vision
Obed's journey can be summarized by three words:

He believes progress does not always require perfect circumstances. His own journey demonstrates his willingness to learn independently, start with available resources, overcome obstacles, and continuously improve.
His long-term ambition is to grow AfriWidget into a recognizable digital platform that helps people solve practical problems through accessible online tools.
At the same time, he continues developing himself as a programmer, entrepreneur, creator, and problem solver.
Obed Avorlenu is still at the beginning of his journey, but his story is already defined by persistence, curiosity, and a desire to create rather than simply consume.
