Olamide Orekunrin

Born in London, England in 1986, Olamide Orekunrin MBBS,PHTLS studied Medicine and Surgery at the Hull York Medical School and bygraduating at the age of 21, she become one of the United Kingdom’s youngestmedical doctors.

Following her graduation, Ola took up a job with theNational Health Service as a Doctor working in the Accident and Emergency wardof a West Midlands hospital. Later, she acted as a Clinical Research Fellow atthe Jikei University Hospital in Japan.

However, she is most recognised for her work as Founder andManaging Director of Flying Doctors Nigeria (FDN). Trained as a helicopterpilot and with specialised training in aviation medicine behind her, Ola pioneeredthe first air operated emergency medical service in Lagos, Nigeria.

Motivated by the death of her sister and her desire toimprove medical services in West Africa, FDN was set up in 2007 and now has acharter of 20 aircraft available 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Ola has also published her own book along with severalarticles in high-profile medical journals and has sat on various influentialboards at the British Medical Association.

Other accolades for Ola include receiving the ThisDay Awardsin 2012 as well as being name a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forumin 2013, alongside Saran Kaba Jones, Cobhams Asuquo, Tara Fela-Durotoye andothers. Olamide is also a TED fellow.
