“So what do you want to know about me ?” he asks pointedly.
In short, here it is: Born and spent most of his childhood until his teens in Malang. He found his calling in the 2000s with batik he had collected. He then developed innovative methods in combining textiles such cotton combbed and drill, and married them with batik fabrics. In 2009, he spread out his first concept and launched the product for public; today, he makes many batik concepts and designs private collections, uniforms of organizations and also involved in creating and developing special motifs design for two local districts (regency) in Central Kalimantan.
One day, he realized that each piece batik told story, through its motifs and the community of artisans who created batiks. “I went through all of batiks I collected, and it opened my mind again, rekindling that dialogue that I had with these pieces. I never studied them before, so everything I knew about batik was from books and seeing them made. Then I had a special chance to study batik privately to few batik masters.” The experience restored his focus on his real passion. He experimented all the ways that allowed the application of batik. It was his “eureka” moment: making batik concepts and designs to develop the new Indonesian Batik.
Over the years, he has through his innovative business Berbatique Jakarta and The Tirta promoted Indonesian batik in his own ways. He stated that his inspiration in this field goes beyond the business side. He also believes that enhancing the balance between the modernizations of batik production and maintaining harmony with our environment is important. “We need to take every opportunity we can to emphasize to the nature side of batik. Batik represents nature, is created using natural resources and therefore a return to its natural roots is key in today’s modern times.” (red.)
