The world has never been more connected. But while we send almost 300 billion emails a day, millions of voices go unheard in parts of the world that are not yet online.

Mobile phones, however, have become a global phenomenon, connecting even the most rural regions and the most marginalised groups.

Radar harnesses the power of mobile as a tool for reporting in areas with few resources and low connectivity. We run training workshops on how to share breaking news via text message. Radar acts a central hub, receiving, collating and sharing these messages online. We post them to Twitter, crowd maps and mainstream news sites, linking reporters with editors and audiences worldwide.

For as little as 1p, news alerts, photos and even video clips can be shared instantly, safely and, if need be, anonymously.

To ensure we are tackling the real black holes in the media, we prioritise groups who are poorly represented in the media, particularly those with disabilities, women and girls, older people, rural and displaced communities.

The flow of independent news is fundamental to peace, personal security and prosperity. Radar offers a low tech, high impact model for ensuring that neglected news is noticed and hushed voices are amplified.
