Mr. Portale began his healthcare career at the University of Michigan Health System, holding a variety of positions over an 11 year period, and ultimately served as the Department Head of Applied Clinical Informatics. Michigan is among eight hospitals to make the U.S. News honor roll every year since 1995.
Previously, he was General Manager Global Health Industry at Sun Microsystems, Executive Director of Mergers and Acquisitions at WellPoint and a Senior Advisor with SAIC.
He is currently the Chief Innovation Officer with Palomar Health, the largest healthcare district in California. As the organization’s first innovation officer, he has established a future-oriented agenda in mobile health, genomics, emerging care delivery models and advanced technology. He is currently an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of California San Diego, Rady School of Management, where he teaches gradutate courses on innovation.
He has served on numerous boards including at the Brookings Institution, Department of Defense, Cisco, IBM and the VA.
He recently contributed a chapter in the “Health and Care Revolution Book,” published by the European Alliance for Innovation.
The San Diego Business Journal named him “Technology Executive of the Year.”
Mr. Portale holds a Masters in Healthcare Leadership from the University of California San Diego.
