Tortillas
As long as I can remember, any event that has ever occurred in my life which involved food, tortillas have always been there, with me. Since the age of 5, I remember eating homemade tortillas my mother would make for my siblings and I with a noodle soup. I would usually mix the soup with cream and cheese, and then tear the pieces of tortillas in triangle shapes and settle them into the soup. Around this age, I clearly remember the noodle soup being my favorite meal to eat. During family reunions, birthday parties, weddings, Christmas or Thanksgiving, the food that would be made at these events constantly changed. Sometimes it was carnitas, other times it was grilled chicken or carne asada, rice and beans. But the one item that would always accompany the dishes, no matter the event, were and are tortillas. Now, at 18, I still continue to eat tortillas. For me, tortillas are a vital part of my life, as they constantly remind me of my family, my upbringing, culture and many memorable events that have transpired. Recently, I attended my little sister’s birthday party and sure enough the tortillas were plentiful. I will continue to eat tortillas until my last breath.
