Out Of The Dark

High Wycombe

Out of the Dark is a charitable social enterprise that recycles, restores and revamps salvaged furniture as a means to train, educate and employ young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Founded by Jay and Jade Blades, Out of the Dark is an extension to Street Dreams, the charity that they have been running for the past 13 years.

Their charity's projects are all about supporting young people achieve a better life and steer away from crime, and this project brings in the element of craft, DIY and work skills. Not to mention the development of self esteem and confidence.

Their personal experience of rebellion and hardship in teenage years coupled with professional backgrounds in building and interior design has been the right mixture to make Out of the Dark a success.

Through Out of the Dark we are helping local disadvantaged young people steer away from crime.

Creative and practical skills training, education in business and life skills are helping participants to become more confident in achieving their full potential. The project also helps young people to become job ready.

In the past 3 years we have worked with 48 young people on the practical side of the project. 9 of these young people have now gone on to full time jobs, 6 of them are carrying on in full time education, 12 of them are currently on the project as trainees, and 5 of them are paid workers on the project. We have also had 32 people volunteering on the project's business side. Some of these persons are still at school, some are university graduates and some are professionals.

Out of the Dark is based in High Wycombe, the once epicentre of British furniture manufacturing.

By salvaging iconic pieces of furniture we are not only lessening the amount of CO2 emissions and amount of rubbish in landfill sites, we are giving the furniture a new lease of life that will extend the history for new generations to savour.

Our workshop is in High Wycombe, only 30 minutes away from London, in a town that was renowned for its furniture in the early 20th century.
