Poisoning Vitamin B
United States
Definition: In vitamin B poisoning occurs as a result of taking high potency vitamin supplements. The complex comprises several water-soluble vitamins B: pantothenic acid, biotin, thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (Vitamin B4), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), folic acid (vitamin B9) and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12 ). These nutrients are grouped because of similarities in their properties, its distribution in the food, and its physiological function that overlaps as coenzymes in the metabolic processes.
Not the RDA of thiamine (vitamin B1) is 1 to 1.4 mg, the riboflavin (vitamin B2) is 1.6 mg, the niacin (Vitamin B4) is 13 to 18 mg, and the pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is 4 to 7 mg, and the pyridoxine (vitamin B6) is 2 to 2.2 mg, the folic acid (vitamin B9) is 400 mcg (micrograms), and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) is 3 mcg. The RDA for biotin, also a B vitamin, is 100 to 200 mg ("How to Know").
For example, vitamin B6 toxicity occurs when taken for years over dose of 50-500 times the recommended daily dose (hypervitaminosis) (Beers). Almost any nutrient toxicity occurs in response to food intake in the diet.
Risk although vitamin supplements are common with known deficiency or not, the risk of overdose and toxicity is minimal in the absence of megadoses. No risk of overdose by ingesting vitamin B sources in foods.
Incidence and Prevalence the incidence of vitamin B6 toxicity is higher than that of other vitamins, yet it is rare.
Diagnosis Interrogation nonspecific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and rash are common with any acute or chronic overdose of vitamins. The symptoms caused by vitamin may be consecutive to those caused by additives (such as mannitol), dyes or binders, but these symptoms are usually mild.
The individual with suspected overdose of vitamin B1 may present with signs of shock, including shortness of breath (dyspnea), weakness, fainting, itching and hives, or may look like it's about to fall asleep (drowsiness). The subject who has taken an overdose of vitamin B2 may have urine dark yellow-orange. The individual may complain of ruddy skin 20-30 minutes after taking too much vitamin B4, along with abdominal cramps, lightheadedness, headache, fainting, or sweating......
