My writing is like a sculpture, since it takes shape in a manner similar to how a sculptor creates his work. As with a sculptor, I start out with a shapeless mass of potential ideas, all of which I write down in a fever of unconscious activity. I then must contemplate what I have written before I can begin shaping it. Slowly and gradually, I craft my piece, chiseling away the unnecessary parts, revealing the essential structure and ideas as a sculptor would transform a block of stone into a living thing. Eventually, after my writing has assumed its basic shape, I begin to edit and revise it, as a sculptor might smooth and polish his work. Both sculptor and I focus on the seemingly insignificant details of our work to perfect it. Finally, when only the essential remains, our pieces are complete, and we both feel satisfaction and pride that we have created something of lasting value.
