Pablo Figueroa
Assistant Professor in Tokyo, Japan
I am a sociocultural anthropologist and assistant professor in the Center for International Education at Waseda University. In this position, I teach courses on globalization, leadership, and disasters. My anthropological research is centered on risk communication, governance, and cultural representations of the Fukushima nuclear accident.
Since 2011, I have been involved in projects dealing with the internationalization of Japanese education at Waseda University through the perspectives of anthropology and leadership. Currently, I teach the following semester courses: Leadership, Globalization, and Social Change; Current Perspectives of Global Leadership; Leadership and Disaster; and Western Perceptions of Japaneseness. Offered by the Global Education Center, these courses are part of the Global Leadership Studies (GLS) University-Wide Minor and the Global Studies (GS) University-Wide Minor.
Before working with sociocultural issues in contemporary Japan, I did research on alterities, indigeneity, and the commodification of mountain environments. Other academic interests include medical anthropology, visual ethnography, and anthropology of the body.
