Born, raised and still living in Colorado, my parents were both from Crete (hence my name). I have studied alpine, woodland and steppe plants on five continents and grown many thousands of species. I revel in fragrant soil.

I have an extraordinary family--my mate, Jan and two great kids--and a vast extended clan--every one of whom I love and respect. And an amazing network of friends and colleagues who keep me committed and busy.

I have been privileged to work at one of America's greatest gardens for 39 years and counting.
