The Seamstress
Sewing has always been a big part of my life. When I was younger, I would sew pillows around the house. I bought my first sewing machine the summer before I left for college, and I’ve been sewing ever since. I went from sewing pillows to sewing beautiful dresses. The talent for me was natural since I never took a sewing class before. I felt as if a piece of me that had always been missing was now made whole. The years spent being bored around the house came to an end with something as simple as a needle and thread. I tend to be a reserved person so sewing allowed me to express my creativity and give people a glimpse of who I am not only as a person but also as an artist.
My first year in college, I joined the Fashion Design Student Association and my life has never been the same ever since. This club challenged me to push myself and strengthen my sewing skills. In preparation for the spring fashion show, I started cutting out patterns to create outfits instead of following directions from DIY YouTube videos. At first glance, the patterns looked like a blueprint for a house; I was confused and frustrated to the point where I felt like throwing my sewing machine upside the wall; however, I refused to give up. I kept pushing forward to be able to read the pattern as if it were scripture. As a result, I was able to create two dresses and a jumpsuit for the show. In addition to improving my sewing skills, I also strengthened my social skills and made new friends in FDSA. Overall, I use sewing to display my artistic skills to the world.
