Paul Lavender
Senior Pastor in Northampton, United Kingdom
Paul was born in Pembrokeshire in 1969. He was one of those annoyingly precocious children to be called a “musical prodigy”, and gave London debuts in his early teens on both piano and organ, and gave numerous concerts around the world by the time he was 23. He read music at Oxford and went on to study for an M.Phil in Interpretation and Performance, writing a thesis on problems in authentic performance in the organ music of Dieterich Buxtehude.
Paul has worked as a soloist and a repetiteur with Sir Georg Solti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Leo Nucci, and Lucciano Pavarotti amongst others, giving chamber, concerti and solo concerts throughout the UK and in continental Europe and the USA.
As a minister of music, worship leader and music director, he has worked with many of the leading worship leaders in the UK and beyond, such as Graham Kendrick, Sue Rinaldi, Darlene Zschech, Geraldine Latty, Matt Redmann, Brian Doerksen, and the London Community Gospel Choir.
He was a Music Director at the 1994 European Baptist Congress in Lillehammer, the 1996 Evangelical Alliance Congress in Bournemouth, England, the 1999 Willow Creek Church Leadership Summit at the NEC, Birmingham, England and at the Baptist World Alliance Congress in Birmingham England in 2005, where he was Music Director for the worship of 15,000 Christians from around the world. He also studied for an M.Th in Pastoral and Practical Theology at University of Wales College Cardiff between 1997 and 1999. He was also music director at successive National Baptist Assemblies from 1992-2005, an Academic Advisor to the Music and Worship department at the London School of Theology. He became the Senior Minister at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Northampton in October 2007.
Paul has been married to Judith since 1995. They met whilst she was nannying for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s children in Newbury. Before that she was a nanny for an aristocratic London family for whom Prince Charles is Godparent. She has travelled around the world in her work, visiting every continent and making Paul very jealous. She has also cooked for the Queen and Prince Philip!!
Paul and Judith have two wonderful children – Charlotte (b.1999) and Benjamin (b. 2001), who fill their lives with much joy (and noise!). Thankfully they have inherited their mother’s good looks and their father’s good musical taste!!
