Paul Ulrich
Sports Information Director, Coach, and Social Media Manager in San Diego, CA
As a lifelong athlete, I knew I wanted to be involved in athletics at the highest level possible. I was able to achieve this as a student-athlete, playing 4 years of college soccer while attaining my Bachelor's of Science in Kinesiology from the University of St. Katherine in San Marcos, California.
On this journey, I was never quite sure what I was going to do once my playing days were done, my career plans spanning the wide gamut of kinesiology. One year I wanted to be a physical therapist, the next I wanted to start my own goalkeeper academy. I thought about being a head coach at the collegiate level, even in possibly pursuing a PhD en route to a life as an academic. It was not until I completed my undergraduate studies that the perfect job I never knew existed was thrust upon me: the sports information director.
Two and half years after becoming the University of St. Katherine's very first sports information director, I have taught myself, and continue to teach myself, everything there is to know about my field, while taking on all the responsibilities that come with it. With no formal training in the practice, I have helped to establish a department from scratch that is ready to take on the challenge of being an NAIA athletics program.
Needless to say, I have not only found an occupation, I have discovered my passion. My job allows me to work with things I am passionate about; sports, writing, and even my deep love and appreciation for music.
And now, as I am completing my Master's degree at Point Loma Nazarene University, I am excited to see what lies in store.
