After 8+ years, we have found that 90% of our PB&JAMMers will choose to play a musical instrument if given the opportunity! They are grounded more focused students and therefore do better in their studies and they are more expressive, creative and much more self confident than when they first entered the PB&JAMMusic Sessions for Kids™ program(s).
Our “Shaman” sessions is the main component of the three facets of “PB&JAMM sessions” and has now evolved into an integral part of the PB&JAMMusic Sessions for Kids™ enrichment program for grades K-8 with “in-class” and/or “after-school” workshops broken down into three 12-week phases. These sessions are specifically designed for all children, especially those in the English as a second language community and the underserved children living in the Bay Area.
A PB&JAMM workshop session is not, however, a traditional music class. Before we begin, each PB&JAMMer signs a “respect oneself and others” contract and parents are asked to meet with their child’s shaman and pledge to be a an active part of their PB&JAMM experience. Older children are immediately engaged to mentor the younger children, as a way to help foster a “give back to the community” mindset.
