Pedro Fonseca
Student and Composer in Boston, Massachusetts
Born and raised in Brazil, I am a musician who identifies with a mixture of different genres. Music has always been a major part of my life as there are musicians in my family.
My musical identity is informed by my personal history. During my early childhood I almost went blind, doctor said I would lose my sight if I didn't do exactly as he said. For two years I wore an eye patch and retrieved my sight back. This experience has informed my musicianship in many ways.
At Berklee College of Music my student career has been split in two parts. I started in 2004 as a performance major and for two years I struggled academically. My background in music evolved in informal settings: though I could play I couldn't read nor write music.
In 2006 I gave up on an academic career and went back to Brazil. There I started Breculê. During this decade in Brazil I taught myself music theory and was a full-time performer playing all over the country.
In 2015 I decided to face the challenge of coming back to Berklee and finishing my undergraduate degree. I am happy to say that in a few weeks I will start my final semester. Looking at my transcript, the contrast between the first semesters grades and the ones I have earned in the past two years, is dramatic.
In the future, I hope to use music as a tool for healing, social inclusion and spiritual transformation. I look forward to work as a composer, performer and teacher.
