Peera Hemarajata
Consultant in New York
After earning his M.D. from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, Dr. Peera Hemarajata went on to earn his Ph.D. in Molecular Virology and Microbiology from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Most recently, he was awarded a Medical and Public Health Laboratory Microbiology Fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. Over the past 12 years, he has been a key or leading author on 36 scientific publications ranging from clinical assay development to bacterial genetics and genomics projects. Of particular interest to Dr. Hemarajata is host-microbe interactions, immunomodulatory effects of microbes on humans, and antimicrobial resistance. In addition to his research, Peera Hemarajata has served as both a lecturer and clinical instructor for Chulalongkorn University and U.C.L.A. He has also been a member of the Thai Medical Council since 2007, the American Society for Microbiology since 2010, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology since 2015. Though Dr. Hemarajata has several notable publications, his most recent include “Burkholderia pseudomallei:Challenges for the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory – a Response from the Front Line” and “Ciprofloxacin May be Efficacious in Treating Wild-Type Gyrase A Genotype Neisseria gonorrhoeae. In addition to N. gonorrhoeae, Peera Hemarajata has studied a number of other bacterial pathogens noted to be resistant to antibiotics, such as S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, and K. oxytoca, and also a probiotic organism L. reuteri. He is proud of his research efforts to date and hopes to continue positively impacting the medical community and those infected with the pathogens he studies.
