Penny Seume

United Kingdom, Bristol

Penny Seume is a textile designer using site specific imagery from the urban landscape as inspiration for atmosphere, texture and colour. Having completed an MA Design course at Bath Spa University in Textiles, Penny combines traditional fine art techniques of painting and collage with photography and contemporary digital print, to create bespoke and limited edition high quality fabrics and products for interiors. Living and working in Bristol, Penny uses local and global imagery from her travels as inspiration; her unique designs reference the original location in a subtle way and capture some of the inherent mood and magic.

Visits to New York prompted designs reflecting the grids and repeating shapes in the architecture and street furniture, as well as in the flat blue wintry sky and gold glowing skyscraper and subway windows. The mood is inviting, warm and tactile.
Penny has recently created work celebrating the London Embankment for Handmade in Britain at the Oxo Tower gallery. Architectural elements and details such as mysterious colours and reflections of lights across the Thames and delicate streetlights inspired ink drawings, acrylic paintings and a multi-layered painted collage.

The New York range was one of 4 finalists in the fabric category for New Design Britain awards at Interiors UK in January 2012, winning a highly commended recommendation. Her work was selected to show with the British European Design Group (BEDG) in New York in May 2012.
