Perry Weitz
Perry Weitz is a co-founding senior partner of leading mass tort and personal-injury litigation firm, Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C.
Weitz earned a B.A. from George Washington University in 1981, and went on to earn a juris doctor from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University in 1983. In 1985, he was admitted to practice law in the state of New York and in 1986 that was extended to include the United States District Court Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
Perry Weitz has always been motivated by his desire to help people who don’t have the resources to help themselves. Weitz and partner Arthur Luxenberg started their firm in 1986 and have together changed the shape of asbestos litigation in New York State. One of their earliest cases involved 36 shipyard workers who had contracted mesothelioma after working around asbestos on the job throughout the 1940s. Weitz mortgaged his own home to help cover the costs of litigation, and helped win a $75 million verdict for the shipyard workers. Now the firm’s principal negotiator, Weitz has helped to reach settlements in more than 1,000 cases.
As a skilled lecturer, Weitz has led conferences and co-chaired several notable events including the Perrin Conferences Asbestos Symposium in 2014, and both the Asbestos Bankruptcy Conference and the Oil in the Gulf - Litigation and Insurance Coverage conference in 2010.
Weitz serves on the boards of several organizations including the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, the Legal Aid Society, and the Jewish Lawyer Guild. He is a chairperson of the Tort and General Negligence sections of the New York County Lawyers Association. Weitz is a member of the Mass Tort Committee of the American Association for Justice and serves as dean’s counsel for Hofstra University.
