Peter M. Samburu
Spatial Planner Urban Designer in Nairobi, Kenya
I am a spatial planner, urban designer, NEMA-licensed lead environmental expert, and GIS & remote sensing specialist with over 10 years of progressive experience in urban and regional planning, environmental assessment, spatial design, and sustainable development across Kenya and East Africa.
I hold a PhD in Planning (Urban Design) and a Master of Architecture and Planning Beyond Sustainability from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, and a Master of Arts in Project Planning and Management, alongside a first-class honours bachelor's degree in spatial planning. I was also the valedictorian of the 3rd graduation ceremony at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST).
Currently, I serve as a lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at JOOUST, where I teach spatial planning and design studios, architecture and construction, GIS & remote sensing, urban landscape design, computer-aided design, computer-aided cartography, spatial models in planning, urban design, and rural and neighbourhood planning. My academic work is complemented by an extensive consultancy portfolio of over forty planning, environmental, and infrastructure projects, including EIAs/ESIAs, county and municipal spatial plans, master plans, informal settlement upgrading, land use modelling, NMT infrastructure, and GIS-based decision support systems.
I am a Graduate Member of the Kenya Institute of Planners (KIP) and the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) - Town Planners Chapter, as well as a lead member of the Environment Institute of Kenya (EIK). My professional interests lie at the intersection of urban resilience, environmental governance, sustainable cities, spatial analytics, and policy-informed planning. I have published in peer-reviewed journals and participated in international collaborations with institutions such as Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), and East Central University (USA).
I am open to professional collaborations, consultancy engagements, research partnerships, and policy advisory roles in spatial planning, environmental assessment, urban development, and GIS-enabled planning.
