About me...

Dr. Philip Chiu
I am Philip Chiu, a dedicated thoracic surgeon, and endoscopist deeply committed to advancing the field of endoscopy. Currently, I hold the esteemed position of Professor and Director of the Digestive Disease Center at Showa University Koto-Toyosu Hospital in Tokyo, where I have been fortunate to lead transformative developments in gastrointestinal endoscopy.

My journey in medicine began at Yamaguchi University School of Medicine, where I earned my M.D. in 1983. Building on this foundation, I pursued further academic achievement, receiving a Ph.D. from Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 1999. Since joining Showa University in 2009, I have had the privilege of serving as a full professor and Chief Professor at the Showa University International Training Center for Endoscopic Surgery (SUITES), before assuming my current role in 2014.

Throughout my career, I have been driven by a passion for innovation. In 1992, I pioneered the cap endoscopic mucosal resection (cap-EMR) technique, significantly enhancing the effectiveness of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). A pivotal moment came in 2008 when I performed the world's first per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for achalasia, a breakthrough that has since transformed treatment options for this condition.

In addition to these milestones, I have contributed to advancements like per-oral endoscopic tumor resection (POET) and the development of POEM+F, an innovative approach addressing gastro-esophageal reflux disease alongside achalasia treatment.

Over the years, my efforts have been honored with awards such as the Crystal award from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Pioneer in Endoscopy Award from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Most notably, in 2022, I was humbled to receive the George Berci Lifetime Achievement Award from SAGES, recognizing my lifelong dedication to advancing endoscopic surgery.

I remain committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in endoscopy, continually striving to improve patient outcomes and inspire future generations in the field.
