My cousin and I were sitting around the house one day, and we were thinking of business ideas that we could collaborate on. We thought of cleaning services, opening a family restaurant, traveling windshield repair, a barbershop, the list goes on. We weren't crafty or had any special skills or interests that we felt could make any money. I'm an accountant, he's a technician. We're just two normal guys.
So we pondered for a couple weeks, and the only thing we knew was it had to be something we were interested in. It couldn't just be anything. So we thought a little more and listed the things we enjoyed doing. Sports? We're far from pro athlete shape. Gambling? I'm more risk averse when it's comes to money. Cars? We drive Prius'. Although we did have a stint driving for Uber. Partying? Yessssssssss. Photography? Nooooooo. Taking pictures? Yessssssss. So we combined partying and taking pictures and thought of a photobooth! Sounded like a great idea at the time.
You figure all you have to do for a photobooth is set it and forget it. Like one of those rotisserie chickens on the infomercials, right? WRONG! Can't we just set the DSLR in auto mode and it'll work itself out? Absolutely not. Aperture? F Stop? ISO? Does it mean ISO, like when Lebron says "ISO"? Or Kobe? Or Russell Westbrook? =( what I'm trying to say is we knew nothing about photography. Then our first paid gig came along. And we still knew nothing about photography.
We get everything up and running at the party, everyone was having a good time, and then that's when the sun started to go down. Oh, light. Prints started to come out darker and darker. The borders I created were nice though. Did I mention we knew nothing about photography? To describe that party in one word it's "refund". But I wouldn't have changed that experience for the world. I learned a lot from the event and am thankful that it happened.
A lot of stress, anguish, frustration, happiness, team work, fun, learning and accomplishment have happened since we launched Photobom Bay Area in December of 2014. But I am amazed at what we've transformed into. Please take a look at our work on Instagram and Facebook and contact us if you'd like to learn more. We now know about photography. =)
