Physical therapy Exercises for Rotator Cuff Injuries

Rotator cuff injuries can be painful enough to restrict your daily activities. However, it can get worse if ignored. Therefore, you must know about the conditions and the related physical therapy exercises. Sandford physical therapy plays a vital role in treating rotator cuff injuries. There is a ball and socket joint in our shoulder surrounded by a group of four muscles, forming a rotator cuff. Repetitive overhead motion and excessive stress on the shoulder or arm can cause rotator cuff injuries. The exercises we are going to discuss can help you treat and even prevent such injuries:

Arm Stretch

This simple and effective exercise helps correct the shoulder joint position and enhance the flexibility of the rotator cuff.

  • Lie straight on your back while extending both your arms and legs.
  • Now lift your injured or targeted arm towards the ceiling.
  • It should reach a position where the shoulder blade comes off the floor.
  • Stay in the position for a few seconds and return the arm to the extended position.

Shoulder Support

It is a common and popular exercise usually recommended for everyone. It helps strengthen the muscles while stretching them appropriately.

  • Stand straight and relax your body.
  • Now lift your injured arm below your eye level.
  • Hold your elbow with the other hand.
  • Try to place the palm of your injured side on the other shoulder while holding the elbow.
  • Using your palm, push the elbow slightly towards your face to stretch the shoulder.
  • Hold for 3-4 seconds and rest.

Pendulum

It can positively impact the rotator cuff injury without causing pain.

  • Stand straight with a chair or support at your uninjured side.
  • Use that object to hold and support your body while leaning forward.
  • Now leave the injured side free enough to dangle.
  • Move it in circular and back/forward motions to enhance the flexibility.
  • Do this until you find it comfortable.
  • Stop after a few seconds and rest.
