Multi-axial movement and nanopositioning- Muli-axial movement occurs when a Piezo motor stage, motion control device or system is made to move in the X, Y, and Z axis of movement. A movement in these 3 planes of Multi-axial movement is quite different from the linear axis movement which comes from the linear stage (x-axis) and the biaxial (xz-axis) stage movement. This multi-axial movement can be achieved with a combined x-stages or a complete XYZ stage. You can use a combination of 3 linear stages, or a combination of a linear stage and XY stage with the help of brackets depending on your need. But one could argue that a complete xyz stage devices have higher load capacity as well as great for reducing precision errors.

When it comes to the metrology and precision of motion control devices, multi-axial or gantry devices like the hexapod offer the highest form of precision. Especially in the nanometer and micrometer range. The principle of multi-axial movement is applicable in additive manufacturing and you can use it to achieve precision with motion control devices and motors. For instance, you can use it to achieve precision with the help PI designed OEM motor, PI controller, PID controller. Also, it is applicable in imaging and SMC travel.
