I did my engineering in computer science in 2007. Open source was always fascinating to me during the college, but limited to mostly Linux and its variants. Once out of college, i got very lucky to come across a job with VtigerCRM. This was my first real experience with open source and i was amazed as i learnt more about it. The knowledge sharing, the community interactions, everything about open source was what i always thought it to be. Imagine a graduate fresh out of college having his code reviewed by a group of 500-1000 community members who would scrutinize everything (vtiger was smaller back then and has grown considerably now).
The journey with vtiger team was mesmerizing but like all good things, it had to end, and i joined Intacct software solutions in 2010. It is a closed source ERP/accounting solution which is very good at what it does. I liked the new environment and relations in Intacct but i believe open source tends to put a spark of entrepreneurship in you. So, after working for about 18 months in Intacct, i quit and became a freelancer.
It's an interesting job. On the plus side, you don't have to rush to office, you do not have fixed work timings and you get to work on a lot of different technologies which is good if you want to learn things. On the other hand, the work discipline can be hard to maintain and the income can range from huge to nil depending on which kind of a month you are having. But, I guess all said and done, I have (and still am) enjoyed this a lot.
