Workshop Description
Traveling around the world without leaving the room is how this Presentation has been described. The audience gets to explore cultural practices and traditions, understand what drives individuals and whole cultural groups, how to celebrate our diverse population, and how to promote discussion relative to existing core curriculum requirements. The whole workshop is very interactive and those in attendance are encouraged to share personal experiences and ideas. Everyone will leave with a toolkit of information they can share with their students in the classroom and their families at home.
In our global existence, we must break down barriers of ignorance that create fear and dissension. Through exploration of different cultures, we can learn about others, about ourselves, and realize we are more similar than different.
Travel photography will be shared to show traditional dress, body art, marketplaces and much more. A quick review of anthropology will clarify cultural behavior so we can better understand what motivates us as well as individuals from different cultures. Cultural trivia unveils the origins of items we incorporate into our daily lives, such as the toothbrush or foods we love to snack on. Does any of this fall under the purview of core-curriculum requirements? Much of what is shared can easily be incorporated into Science, Geography, History, Math, and Language Arts lessons – and you will be shown how!
Differences go beyond cultural backgrounds. How we react to, and treat, individuals with physical and mental health disorders are learned behaviors with cultural influences which will be explored.
