Plumber in San Diego, California
The Plumbers’ Association of California (PAC) has shared in its official website, winter safety tips in relation to home plumbing. According to the organization, the winter season can be tough on plumbing fixtures given that the drop in temperatures can cause freezing pipes among other plumbing catastrophes.
Benjamin Foster, Executive Director of the PAC says, requests for emergency plumbing services shoots up during the winter, but most of these emergencies he says could have been prevented. The trouble, he says is that more than just a plumbing problem, plumbing emergencies during the snow season causes water damage and residential flooding that could be very perilous and expensive.
Plumbing fixtures found outdoors should also be prepped for the winter months as it is the first to be affected once the mercury drops. The website Family Handyman for instance shared tips to avoid plumbing issues during the winter season, and prepping outdoor plumbing systems topped their list.
“Turn off outdoor faucets at their shutoff valves. Open the faucet and then open the bleeder cap on the shutoff valve to drain any water out of the pipe. If you don’t drain the pipe, it can still freeze and crack. Leave the bleeder cap open with a bucket underneath to catch any drips. If the dripping continues, your shutoff valve needs to be replaced.” Read the rest of their list here.
Apart from faucets, other outdoor plumbing fixtures need to be prepped too like the sprinklers and hoses which should be drained just like the swimming pool. Exposed pipes in areas indoors that are not heated by the home HVAC system such as those in the carports should likewise be protected through insulation or piping. International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials
“Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children. When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing. Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night.”
