The most renowned variation of poker starts with blind bets: first player to the dealer's left puts up the 'small blind' (half the minimum bet) and the second player puts up the 'big blind' (full minimum bet).

Then everybody is dealt 2 'pocket cards', the cards that only the player sees, and the next player after the "big blind" either calls, raises or folds the bet. Then betting goes on clockwise.

Then 3 community cards are dealt face-up and these are called 'the flop' and are followed by a round of betting. Then the 4th community card is shown and another round of betting begins. After the 5th community card ('the river' or 'the 5th street') is shown the final round of betting takes place. Then the players show the hands they managed to make by combining their hole cards with the community cards and the player with the strongest hand wins the pot.
