Treatment of Removable Pools: Water Maintenance and Useful Tips

Keeping your pool water in perfect condition is very easy. In this article we detail the basic terminology you need to know about pool water treatment and maintenance. We hope you find it helpful!

- What is pH?

The pH level tells us whether a substance is acidic or basic. The pH values are between 0 (minimum acidic degree) and 14 (maximum basic degree). Good control of the pH is essential for the correct maintenance of swimming pools.

- What pH level should my pool have?

The ideal level is between 7.2 and 7.6. Use a product to increase or decrease the pH level of your pool as the case may be.

- How often should I measure the pH level?

Every week. To do the measurement correctly, take a water sample 15cm deep. At the beginning of the season, it is very important that you take a measurement and apply a correct pool water treatment, whether you have just filled the pool or if you have removed the winter cover and are going to reuse the water.

There are several methods to measure the pH of pool water. The most commonly used methods (due to their simplicity and low cost) are the paper strip indicator (which changes color after being introduced into the water and indicates the pH level) or the reagent method (which consists of filling a bottle and pouring a few drops that change the color of the water sample, which is then compared with a color code).

- Symptoms of incorrect pH:

An inadequate pH level will prevent any chemical from acting correctly. Therefore, different symptoms may appear such as itchy eyes, cloudy water (brown in some cases), chlorine odor, or algae formation. Proper pool treatment involves continuous monitoring of the pH level.

There are certain manufacturers that offer in only one product several chemical components. It is called "triple action chlorine" and incorporates chlorine, algaecide, and flocculant. There are products with labels indicating "5-effect chlorine" (or even more). In reality, it has the same components as triple-action chlorine (chlorine, algaecide, and flocculant for swimming pools) but they highlight the properties of these three chemical components, which are: water clarifier, brightener, disinfectant, bactericide, fungicide, anti-limescale, etc.
