Promise rings might seem like an out dated idea, but they’re not as old fashioned as you think.

Promise rings should not be confused with purity rings. While they might seem similar, they are not necessarily the same thing. Purity rings are all about the wearer intending to stay celibate until marriage, and may be bought by oneself, or given by a church, or one’s parents, etc. A promise ring, contrarily, is given to the wearer by a significant other and symbolises the commitment to the relationship on the part of the giver. It is usually followed by an engagement ring at a later date.

Young people are the more common consumers of these rings, and as such prices tend to be more affordable and quality lower than that of engagement rings. If there is budget for it, however, promise rings can still be bought in gold, white gold, rose gold or platinum with any range of precious to semi-precious stones.

Promise rings may be worn in the traditional spot of the engagement ring, until such time as an actual engagement ring takes its place, or it may be worn on the opposite hand. The wearer might even chose to forgo wearing it on any finger and choose instead to wear it on a chain around the neck – the finger one wears this ring on is by no means a set standard, the choice is entirely up to the wearer.
