Putri R. Santoso

Urban Designer and Urbanism Histories Specialist

I am a trained architect and urban designer based in Jakarta and Hong Kong. My professional engagements ranged in scale, types, and geographies. Most of my portfolios are categorically urban design. I work best with a trans-scalar approach, particularly in translating planning documents and regulations into design. My interests — including infrastructure, urban regeneration and brown-field redevelopment, heritage conservation, urban management, and design failures — stemmed from over fifteen years of professional practice.

I recently completed a PhD in the Department of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). My research operates within the frameworks of infrastructure and development. Focusing on the Sudirman-Thamrin Road in Jakarta, I studied roads and traffic congestion as objects of development in a mode of governance characterized by thick overlaps of seemingly fragmented spatial interventions, which involved a wide array of actors and aspired to fit the development ambitions. I termed this regime the “urbanism of deficiency.

Currently, I am engaged as a Senior Research Assistant on “Contingent Habitat, Coastal Connection,” a research project on the climate histories of housing in Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta, and Bangkok, led by Prof. Eunice Seng in the Department of Architecture, HKU, and funded by the General Research Fund (GRF) of the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong.

Do reach out if you find any resonance with my current and previous works, as well as my interests. I would be more than happy to explore possibilities for future collaborations!
