William Mead saw opportunity in 1757 New London, and had what is now known as Mead's Tavern built right at the crossroads in 1763. Little did he know that the crossroads the building was situated on would be almost symbolic to the crossroads between time and culture the building itself has come to stand for. Firstly licensed as a tavern, and operating as such for many years, later it was to become a girl's school, and later still, an independent residence. Because a significant amount of the verifiable history still needs to be uncovered, a valuable opportunity has opened up for researchers from the community and the school to investigate the unknown and the forgotten.
