Ramasamy Jayakumar இரா ஜெயக்குமார்

I was born into a farming family in Kattur Village, Lalgudi Taluk, in Tiruchirapalli District. I received my early education in Puthanampatti and Tiruchirapalli before continuing my studies at National College, Tiruchirapalli, and Annamalai University. A deep passion for Earth Sciences led me to pursue doctoral research at Bharathidasan University, where I earned my Ph.D. in 1993.

Over the years, my career has taken me through enriching roles at Anna University, Bharathidasan University, WS Atkins International, and the EU-India partnership. I now serve with the United Nations in Paris, having gained broad international experience across several global duty stations. These opportunities have deepened my commitment to fostering international cooperation in addressing critical environmental challenges.

My wife, Geetha, is an Electronics and Communication Engineer with a PhD in Mobile Networking Protocols. She has taught at universities in both India and China.

Our son, Ragittaran, completed his MBBS at St George's, University of London, and his foundation training at Ninewells Hospital, University of Dundee. He subsequently served as a Clinical Teaching Fellow at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, affiliated with University College London, where he was engaged in medical research and teaching. He is now a Specialty Trainee in Clinical Radiology at Barts Health NHS Trust, London, having recently passed the FRCR Part A examination.

Outside of work, I enjoy reading Tamil and English literature. I represented my university in basketball and badminton and still play occasionally for leisure. At heart, I consider myself an ordinary individual from southern India (தமிழன்), guided by a simple desire to make a meaningful contribution to my field and community.

யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர், தீதும் நன்றும் பிறர்தர வாரா --கணியன் பூங்குன்றனார்--
It reflects universal brotherhood, meaning: "Every town is my own. Every person is my family. Good and evil do not come from others - they come from within." This is one of the most celebrated verses in classical Tamil literature, from Purananuru (poem 192), composed by Kaniyan Pungundranar, likely around 2,000 years ago.

பச்சை மாமலை போல் மேனி பவளவாய்க் கமலச் செங்கண்

அச்சுதா அமரர் ஏறே ! ஆயர்தம் கொழுந்தே ! என்னும்

இச்சுவை தவிர யான் போய் இந்திர லோகம் ஆளும்
