If you want to legally be allowed to use a vehicle on the roads then you must pass a driving test. Many people, especially those who have grown up in the world of karting or motorsports, find themselves asking why driving lessons are necessary - especially in the world of cruise control and automatic gears. Cars are not difficult to operate, so why should people be expected to spend a lot of time and money on learning to drive?

The main reason that driving lessons are necessary is that they teach people the conventions of using the road. The mechanical aspects of learning to control a moving vehicle are just a small part of learning to drive. The most important part of learning to drive is learning how other road users are likely to act and how to act on the road yourself.

There are numerous conventions associated with staying safe on the road. Things like signalling and right of way are techniques that all road users must know so that people do not crash into each other. This is what a driving instructor will teach you.

Another thing that driving instructors teach is how to read road signs and how to spot potential hazards. In an ideal world everyone would act in the same, predictable but safe manner. Unfortunately this does not always happen. A good driving instructor will teach you how to spot hazards such as a child that might run out into the road. They will also teach you how to protect yourself on the road by leaving a safe distance between you and the car in front. This will ensure that if the driver suddenly slows down or makes an unexpected manoeuvre, then you will be protected from a collision.
