For the most part, riddles are just games - they are told for fun and to pass the time. In ancient societies they were also considered great tests of intelligence and cleverness, and sometimes they are still used in this way. The most famous example is the Enigma of the Sphinx, from Sophocles' Oedipus the king. (See section 7 for the riddle.) In the play, the sphinx would kill anyone who didn't answer the riddle. The hero, Oedipus, is the first person to solve the riddle, thereby proving his wisdom and showing himself worthy to pass the Sphinx. https://raadsels.info/
