Rachel Brown
Student and Teacher in Sudbury, ON, Canada
Hey, I’m Rachel. I grew up in a small town on the southern coast of Georgian Bay and I now reside in an even smaller farm town called Flesherton Ont. I grew up playing many sports such as soccer, volleyball, and skiing. I come from a farming family which means most of my childhood was spent outside exploring and doing manual labour. Growing up, I fell in love with the sport of volleyball and played from grade six all the way to grade 12, with a year of club in there too. I still love volleyball and play on a Women’s tournament team. From my childhood I also learned to love the outdoors. To this day I enjoy fishing, hiking and camping. Growing up in the country also exposed me to getting to drive lots of machinery and my dad’s ‘toys’ (snowmobiles, ATV's and boats). This too has stuck with me as I’ve grown, and I take every chance I can to ride on these vehicles.
Currently, I’m a fourth-year student attending Laurentian University in Sudbury, ON, Canada. I am pursuing my Bachelor of Physical and Health Education along with a Bachelor of Education. Upon graduating with a B.Ed, I hope to pursue a part-time masters degree of Physical Education at Nipissing University in North Bay. During this time, I hope to be supply teaching too.
Since grade 9, my dream job has been a high school physical education teacher. I took physical education all throughout high school and had some amazing teachers as well as some inexperienced teachers. During placements and emergency supply teaching I have worked alongside both types of teachers in the phys-ed department. I have seen as a student and teacher how having inexperienced teachers in the phys-ed department can be detrimental to the health and involvement of students. My goal as a future teacher is to end this and provide my students with the best possible experience to promote health and phys-ed as a positive aspect of their life.
