Rachel Dzombak

Berkeley, CA

I create solutions for the world's most compelling challenges.

Currently, I study complex systems as a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. Through my work with the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Sustainability (LMAS), I research challenges associated with manufacturing in developing countries as well as the social impacts of global supply chains. I also serve on the editing team for Annual Review of Environment and Resources, an academic publication that covers the current state of environmental science in relation to society.

Prior to attending Berkeley, I founded a for-profit health company in Nyeri, Kenya called Mashavu: Networked Health Solutions. Mashavu, which means "chubby-cheeks" in Swahili, empowers community health workers to track local health data on the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Mashavu additionally offers follow-up monitoring for patients found to have diabetes and hypertension.

I have published multiple papers on systems thinking, biomedical device design, engineering education, and impact assessment in conjunction with the Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship Program at Penn State University.
