Rachel Harlich
A recent graduate of American University in Washington, D.C., Rachel Harlich studied anthropology and education. As a student, she served as a community organizer and teaching assistant. Rachel Harlich also spent a semester abroad, studying at the University of Ghana and interning for a nongovernmental organization in Accra.
Presently, Rachel Harlich provides counseling through a telephone hotline and oversees fellow staff members in assisting individuals who have experienced sexual assault. She also escorts women seeking to terminate pregnancies to Washington-area clinics. She has dedicated herself to promoting abortion rights, feminism, and social justice. In the future, she hopes to study social work at the graduate level.
In one project, Rachel Harlich spent half a year organizing the Combating Latent Inequality Together Festival in Washington. She coordinated workshops and events for the three-day gathering, which combined punk music and culture with a celebration of feminism and women.
Previously, she worked with DC Students for a Democratic Society (DC-SDS) as a Funk the War Organizer. In this capacity, Rachel Harlich provided training, led meetings, and coordinated a variety of events for social and educational purposes. She also obtained experience in fund-raising and creating marketing materials. Throughout her time with DC-SDS, she created and maintained relationships with young people in the District.
To relax, Rachel Harlich engages in an array of activities. She enjoys sewing, knitting, and crochet as well as listening to twee pop, queercore, Midwest emo, and pop punk. An avid reader, she appreciates the poems of Pablo Neruda, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Audre Lorde, the fiction of Philip K. Dick, and graphic works of both fiction and nonfiction.
