After he earned his bachelor of arts in economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and became a commissioned officer with the United States Air Force (USAF), Ralph Thurman studied at the US Air Force Air Command and Staff College and Squadron Officer's School. He focused on leadership, team building, the logic and ethics of making decisions, and warfare across multiple domains. Ralph Holloway Thurman also attended Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training to prepare for difficult combat situations and completed a master of arts in management at Webster University.

For the next two decades, Mr. Thurman served on active duty and in the reserves for the Air Force as a combat and instructor pilot. Post military service, he worked in executive roles with companies such as Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Pharmaceuticals and Corning Life Sciences. In 1999, he founded VIASYS Healthcare, which he led as CEO for nine years.

Since 2008, Ralph Holloway Thurman has managed health-care technology businesses as a private equity operating partner and senior advisor. He functions as the director of TFF Pharmaceuticals and the executive chairman of Outlook Therapeutics. In addition, he teaches financial leadership to postgraduate students at Merrimack College, and he founded The Giving Tree Foundation as a way to give back to the community. He hols an Airline Transport Pilot certificate and is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain.
